Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I want to take you to places, people, experiences, and--of course--cuisines which I have relished in life so far. Here's what I have been dreaming of for years...

Forget the nice trips! Let's take mystical journeys, pay attention to the ordinary, and learn to see the world a bit differently.

The retreat-like journeys I envision have these characteristics:

  • No itineraries that make you run from here to there. Walk freely instead. Encounter food that surprises and enchants, conversations that invigorate, and rest that restores.
  • Meet local artisans who have dedicated their lives to what they love. They can help you practice being present and feeling at home on earth.
  • No shiny tourist objects to distract you. Rather, learn to listen and hear what the Universe is telling you. Discover the kindness, courage, and creativity you did not know you had.
  • You are a co-creative participant with your presence and your story.
  • Oh, and no more coming back home to the same old same old! Return with a new mindset and practices. Take your experience back into your kitchen, car, and office. Bring to life your new story, the one that is more true and already alive in you.

Cheers from New York City,

Samir Selmanović, Ph.D. PCC

P.S.  Or, you can simply come along and enjoy the journey! The sacred loves the company of those who know how to chill.

Find Belonging and Becoming In Croatia

Sep 12-19, 2020 - Adriatic Coast, CROATIA

NAUTICAL RETREAT (32 spots - 4 boats)

We will get lost in the slowing down of time. Hours feel like days.

And the elements! Air, fire, water, and earth are the essential elements for all mystics. Not to mention cuisine based on each one of them.

We will ask four critical questions about life and answer them through our experiences with sea, islands, people, food (and surprises I cannot share). What we learn will change us.

Picture this. After waking up on a boat, you walk out on the deck sure you are still dreaming. You jump into the primal blue, disappear into watery joy, and then come back, with everything still in utter silence and the aroma of breakfast filling up the lagoon.

"Expand the lungs of your life."

~ Samir Selmanović

What is a retreat anyway?

A retreat is far more than taking rest or changing the scenery.

For thousands of years, humans have been taking retreats (a.k.a. rites of passage). Now science tells us that we have a deep need to retreat from our usual ways of thinking, reacting and being and wayfind through our lives. That is how we grow. In re-treat, we treat ourselves with restorative self-compassion and expose ourselves to generative challenges.

A real renewal comes by ending whatever is and entering a temporary state of chaos, where anything is possible. The experience opens the door to places we never knew were there. Chaos does not have to be disruptive, however. When we learn to be in harmony with life within us and around us, chaos is full of beautiful possibilities, fresh energies, and rich harvests.

Think of three transformative stages of a retreat:

  1. SEPARATION from the habitual way of day-to-day living
  2. DISCOVERY in that in-between and unknown space
  3. INTEGRATION into our daily environment

Crossing thresholds was first discovered by anthropologists as the most natural, most effective and most lasting approach to human transformation across cultures and time. While no religion has a copyright on the way human life thrives through its seasons, each religion or life philosophy has its own door into the mystery of human experience. And each has something to teach us.

Retreats as mystical journeys are enriching on another level. They expand our perceptions and we learn to live more of life and live it more deeply.

When we retreat (as opposed to going on another tourist trip), we:

  • Temporarily separate ourselves from our habitual environment (which is, by the way, naturally invested in keeping us the same)
  • Interrupt information overload and the endless life-hacking advice being streamed into our lives
  • Explore our emerging self—the one that has been in the making all along, while we were unaware
  • Let go of stories that have outlasted their accuracy and usefulness
  • Bring our past, present, and future into an awake, lucid moment that irreversibly shifts our perception
  • Receive insight, inspiration, and support for our transformation as we embark on new beginnings
